The GIH Health Policy Exchange provides policy-engaged funders with information on current issues, access to leading thinkers, and connections with grantmaking peers. This year’s theme is Protecting the Freedom to Give. Against a backdrop of recent federal funding cuts, executive orders, and threats to philanthropy, it is more important than ever for health funders to educate, advocate, and collaborate to support the people, places, and things that are important to us.

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Health

Two hundred and fifty years ago America’s founders came together to say the current system of government was not working for them. This act sparked the birth of a new nation founded on principles of freedom, equality, and democracy. The document they signed clearly articulates the founders’ belief in the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Health—and the ability to lead a healthy and productive life—is deeply intertwined with these ideals.

The Terrance Keenan Leadership Award recognizes and rewards grantmakers whose thoughtful use of philanthropic dollars has had an impact on human health, at any level.

The Andy Hyman Award for Advocacy is presented each year to an outstanding advocacy grantee.

Behavioral Health Strategies

GIH conducted a survey in late 2024 on funder engagement in behavioral health. This fact sheet, based on a sample of 139 health funders, summarizes the current trends, gaps, successes and challenges for funders. It also highlights philanthropy’s continued commitment to behavioral health while also signaling concern about the upcoming funding environment.

The Future of Rural Health and Well-Being: Findings from a Landscape Analysis and Listening Sessions

Grantmakers In Health and the National Rural Health Association, with support from the Georgia Health Policy Center, are leading an initiative to reimagine rural health and well-being by aligning systems and resources to achieve optimal health for all individuals living in rural America. As part of this effort, the Georgia Health Policy Center conducted a landscape analysis highlighting a sampling of a cross-section of organizations and leaders in rural health and hosted two national listening sessions of key stakeholders.

Steady Voices in Unsteady Times: Strategies for Communicating in Crisis

Communicating effectively in times of crisis is essential for maintaining public trust and organizational reputation. It can also minimize the spread of false or misleading information. This virtual workshop is designed to support health funders’ efforts to effectively communicate while managing potential risks of ideologically- and politically-driven threats. Beth Tritter and Chrystal Okonta from FGS Global will lead the program. Participants will learn how to prepare for a communications crisis and test drive practical tools for managing and responding. Working in groups, participants will also work to address a plausible and timely challenge using best practices and core principles of effective crisis response.
